Conclusions

The SWaMP area also forms a large proportion of the land border with the Republic of Ireland border counties and therefore the cooperation with these Councils in the management of wastes is an important element for the group. Inter region interaction and cross border cooperation are both discussed below.

In preparing this plan, SWaMP has consulted with the two other sub-regional groups, arc21 and the North West Region Waste Management Strategy Group, through an inter-group forum to ensure that potential areas of cooperation can be developed.

The SWaMP area is located adjacent to all the Republic of Ireland border counties and therefore the cooperation with these Councils in the management of wastes is an important element for the group.

SWaMP will seek to identify areas of mutual interest between inter region and cross border waste management groups. This includes seeking to establish potential opportunities for the inter region and cross border movement of wastes for recycling and disposal through discussions with the relevant authorities. SWaMP supports the cross border movement of municipal wastes for the purposes of recovery and will consider the acceptance of wastes at landfill sites in its area, subject to the agreement of landfill site operators and respective councils. Likewise, SWaMP will consider the transfrontier movement of waste out of the area for disposal, subject to agreement of the landfill site operatives and respective councils.

Th diagram below identifies the preferred transport corridors for the potential movement of wastes between these areas.

Given that SWaMP forms a large proportion of the land border it is proposed that waste management cooperation may lead to mutual benefits in meeting statutory obligations and may provide cost effective solutions.
